New York State Takes Bold Steps in Renewable Energy During Climate Week
In a significant move to bolster its renewable energy initiatives, Governor Kathy Hochul of New York announced the issuance of final siting permits for two major renewable energy projects: the Rich Road Solar Energy Center and the Prattsburgh Wind LLC project. The Rich Road Solar Energy Center, located in St. Lawrence County, is set to be a 240 megawatt (MW) solar farm, complemented by a 20 MW battery energy storage system (BESS) in the Town of Canton. The facility will feature three ground-mounted solar photovoltaic arrays on single-axis tracker racking systems, along with a collection substation and a point of interconnection switchyard. The Prattsburgh wind farm, on the other hand, will consist of 36 wind turbines across approximately 53 acres of rural land, with its application completed on October 30, 2023.
Commitment to Climate Goals
Both projects are integral to New York’s broader strategy to meet the targets set forth by the CLCPA, which mandates that 70 percent of the state’s electricity come from renewable sources by 2030 and aims for a zero-emissions electricity sector by 2040.
