Texas Toll Services Transition: What You Need to Know
The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) is making significant changes to its toll services, a move that aims to enhance efficiency and improve customer service for TxTag users. This transition will see the Harris County Toll Road Authority (HCTRA) take over the collection, billing, and customer service responsibilities for TxTag customers, marking a new chapter in Texas toll management.
The Transition Process
As part of this transition, TxDOT has begun notifying TxTag customers about the upcoming changes. In an email obtained by KVUE, the agency outlined that HCTRA, which has been managing tolls in the Houston area for over 40 years, will assume these responsibilities. However, before this change can take effect, the Texas Transportation Commission must officially approve the transition.
What Should TxTag Users Do Next?
For TxTag users, there are important steps to take before the transition is finalized. TxDOT advises users to log into their TxTag accounts before October 15, 2024. This is crucial for confirming that all contact details, vehicle information, and payment methods are accurate. Only accounts that are active and in good standing will be eligible for transfer to HCTRA.
If you are a TxTag user, rest assured that you can continue to use your toll tags across Texas, Oklahoma, and Kansas as usual. For those who do not currently have a TxTag but are receiving bills, there is still an opportunity to sign up for the service before the October deadline.
Understanding Inactive Accounts
It’s essential to note that TxTag accounts that have not seen any activity in the last 12 months will be classified as inactive and will not be transferred to HCTRA. If you wish to ensure your account is transferred, you must contact TxTag customer service before the October 15 deadline. Additionally, users with unpaid balances should be aware that they may face "escalation actions" if these balances remain unpaid before the transition.
For those considering closing their accounts, TxDOT has stated that any remaining balance will be refunded upon closure.
Managing Your Account Post-Transition
Once the transition to HCTRA is complete, customers will manage their accounts through the HCTRA website. For added convenience, TxTag users can also visit EZ TAG stores in the Houston area, as well as Walmart and H-E-B locations, to handle their account needs.
Despite the transfer of toll services, TxDOT will continue to own and maintain the toll roads and associated equipment. The Texas Transportation Commission will still set the rates for TxDOT-owned roads, and importantly, TxDOT has assured customers that toll rates will remain unaffected by this transition.
TxDOT’s Position on the Change
TxDOT has confirmed that HCTRA will take over toll road functions from TTEC Government Solutions, whose contract is set to run through February 28, 2025. However, HCTRA can begin its operations as soon as a formal agreement is executed. It is important to note that while TxDOT has begun informing customers about the transition, the Texas Transportation Commissioners must still sign off on the change. Until a "Toll Services Agreement" is finalized, TxDOT retains the authority to halt all transition activities.
This transition represents a significant shift in how toll services are managed in Texas, with the potential for improved customer service and operational efficiency. As the process unfolds, TxDOT and HCTRA are committed to keeping customers informed and ensuring a smooth transition for all TxTag users.
