Texas Family Distressed by Son’s Mandated Religious Service at High School – NBC 5 Dallas-Fort Worth

Mansfield Family Raises Concerns Over Religious Assembly at Lake Ridge High School

In a recent incident that has sparked significant discussion, a family from Mansfield, Texas, has voiced their concerns regarding a mandatory religious assembly that their son was required to attend during school hours. This event took place at Lake Ridge High School, part of the Mansfield Independent School District, and has raised questions about the separation of church and state in public education.

The Incident Unfolds

Jon Luna, the father of a freshman at Lake Ridge High School, described how his son’s day took an unexpected turn during what was supposed to be a routine advisory study hall period. This time is typically reserved for students to complete assignments and catch up on their studies. However, on that particular Monday, students received an email instructing them to report to the auditorium.

“The advisory class teacher, who also coaches soccer and football, sent the email,” Luna explained. The message was clear: “Go to the theater for advisory.” What followed was a mandatory assembly that Luna’s son and his classmates were compelled to attend, alongside other students from the school.

A Shift to Religious Instruction

Upon entering the auditorium, Luna’s son was met with an unexpected and unfamiliar environment. A leader from the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) took the stage, asking students to take out their Bibles or look up scripture online. The assembly quickly transitioned into a religious service, with the leader inviting students to accept Jesus Christ as their savior and leading them in prayer.

Luna’s son, who had never been exposed to religious practices in their family, recorded a portion of the assembly. The leader’s prayer included phrases like, “Jesus, thank you for dying for me. I believe I am a sinner who needed a savior. Come into my life, make me new again.” This moment was particularly alarming for the Luna family, as it represented a significant departure from their personal beliefs and values.

Parental Concerns

Jon Luna expressed his bewilderment at the situation, emphasizing that his son should not have been compelled to participate in a religious event that did not align with their family’s beliefs. “I didn’t understand why he’s being told to do something that he has not subscribed to,” he stated. Luna articulated a broader concern about the implications of such actions in a public school setting, where students come from diverse backgrounds and belief systems.

“It’s fine if they do that, but I don’t know why he’s being forced to do something that’s religious when they don’t know his religion, they don’t know what he believes,” Luna continued. His sentiments reflect a growing concern among parents about the appropriateness of religious activities in public schools, particularly when participation is not clearly optional.

School District’s Response

In response to the family’s concerns, NBC 5 reached out to the Mansfield Independent School District for clarification. A spokesperson for the district stated, “Participation in FCA is a voluntary activity for Lake Ridge students who choose to attend.” They acknowledged that the opportunity to attend FCA during advisory was a recent scheduling change and assured that going forward, teachers would clarify that attendance at such meetings is entirely optional.

The district’s statement aimed to alleviate concerns by emphasizing the voluntary nature of the assembly, although the initial lack of communication regarding this aspect raised questions about how such events are organized and communicated to students and parents.

A Call for Change

Following the incident, Luna reported that the principal of Lake Ridge High School reached out to apologize and expressed hope that this situation would serve as a learning experience for the school. Luna emphasized the importance of ensuring that no student feels uncomfortable or pressured to participate in activities that conflict with their personal beliefs.

“I don’t want my kid to be uncomfortable. No child should go to school and be told to do something that is completely against their foundation, whether it be their religion or their culture,” he stated. This sentiment resonates with many parents who advocate for an inclusive educational environment that respects the diverse beliefs of all students.

As discussions continue around the intersection of education and religion, the Mansfield family’s experience serves as a poignant reminder of the need for clear communication and respect for individual beliefs within public schools.
