Robotics Day & Healthcare Careers Fair: Inspiring the Next Generation in Edinburg
On September 27, 2023, South Texas Health System (STHS) Edinburg opened its doors to a vibrant gathering of young minds during the Robotics Day & Healthcare Careers Fair. This event attracted elementary, middle, and high school students from across the Rio Grande Valley, providing them with a unique opportunity to explore the intersection of technology and healthcare.
A Diverse Group of Attendees
Among the enthusiastic participants were nearly 80 fourth and fifth graders from Cavazos Elementary, students from Mission C.I.S.D.’s health science academy, and around 40 students from Lyford High School’s robotics program. This diverse group represented a cross-section of the community, all eager to learn about the exciting possibilities that lie ahead in the fields of robotics and healthcare.
The Evolution of Robotic Surgery
One of the key highlights of the event was the focus on robotic surgery, a field that has transformed medical practices over the last 25 years. Students learned that robotic surgery is not just a futuristic concept but a reality that is already being utilized globally for various procedures, including hernia repairs, colorectal surgeries, hysterectomies, and bariatric surgery. Unlike traditional surgery, robotic surgery combines the precision of robotic technology with the expertise of human surgeons, allowing for minimally invasive procedures that can lead to quicker recovery times and less pain for patients.
Technological Advancements in Healthcare
The fair emphasized how advancements in technology have revolutionized healthcare delivery. Students were informed that beyond robotic surgery, innovations have led to faster diagnoses and treatments, enhancing patient care significantly. This knowledge is crucial for the next generation of healthcare professionals, as they will be at the forefront of these technological advancements.
Hands-On Experience with the da Vinci Surgical System
A standout feature of the event was the traveling demonstration of the da Vinci 5 Robotic Surgical System. This sophisticated robotic-assisted surgery system, which is already in use at STHS Edinburg, consists of robotic arms that can be equipped with various surgical instruments. The system also includes a surgical console operated by the surgeon and a high-definition vision system that offers a magnified 3D view of the surgical site. This technology allows surgeons to operate with unparalleled precision, flexibility, and control, replicating their hand movements in real-time through laparoscopic instruments.
Interactive Learning Opportunities
In addition to the robotic demonstrations, students had the chance to witness a live procedure in the facility’s Cardiac Cath Lab. This firsthand experience provided them with a glimpse into the real-world applications of the technologies they were learning about. They also interacted with STHS’s Healthcare Technology Management team, gaining insights into the management of nearly 18,000 pieces of medical equipment. This interaction highlighted the importance of technology in modern healthcare and the various career paths available in this field.
Moreover, students learned about clot-busting therapy used for stroke patients and explored the advanced equipment in the hospital’s inpatient rehabilitation gym, which helps patients regain their independence. These experiences not only educated the students about healthcare technologies but also inspired them to consider careers in this vital sector.
Fostering Local Talent
STHS’s overarching goal for the event was to encourage local students to realize their professional potential within their own communities. By showcasing the opportunities available in healthcare and technology, the fair aimed to dispel the notion that pursuing a career in these fields necessitates leaving the Rio Grande Valley. The event served as a reminder that the region is home to innovative healthcare solutions and career opportunities that can contribute to the health and well-being of the community.
A Day of Discovery
The Robotics Day & Healthcare Careers Fair was held in the Texas Room at STHS Edinburg, providing a fitting backdrop for a day filled with discovery and inspiration. As students engaged with the technology and professionals in the field, they were not only learning about the present but also envisioning their future roles in shaping the healthcare landscape. This event marked a significant step in nurturing the next generation of healthcare leaders and innovators in South Texas.
