The State Fair of Texas: A Celebration of Food, Fun, and Family
DALLAS – The excitement is palpable as the State Fair of Texas kicks off its opening weekend, drawing an expected 2.5 million visitors over the next few weeks. This annual extravaganza is not just a fair; it’s a cultural phenomenon that showcases the best of Texas cuisine, thrilling rides, and family-friendly entertainment.
A Culinary Wonderland
One of the most anticipated aspects of the fair is undoubtedly the food. This year, vendors are bringing a fresh wave of culinary creativity that promises to tantalize taste buds. Tom Grace, owner of Pizza By the Giant Slice, has been a staple at the fair for 35 years, operating six locations with the help of his son and a dedicated team of about 65 workers.
Grace describes the fair as a breeding ground for “crazy thoughts and crazy ideas of food.” This year, he’s introducing an Oktoberfest pizza that combines a spicy mustard-infused Alfredo base with German sausage, peppers, and potatoes, all topped with sauerkraut. For just $15, fairgoers can enjoy a massive slice that embodies the spirit of the fair—bold, innovative, and delicious.
Sweet Treats and Fried Favorites
Food at the fair isn’t just about savory options. Clint Probst, owner of Gulf Coast Grill, highlights his caramel macchiato fritters as a fan favorite. Probst notes that a successful fair can be financially rewarding, especially if one of the fried food entries wins an award. “If we have a fried food winner, you could almost make doctor or dentist money out of just working the fair,” he quips, emphasizing the lucrative potential of this beloved event.
Thrilling Rides for All Ages
Beyond the culinary delights, the State Fair of Texas is renowned for its exhilarating rides. With 73 rides on the Midway, there’s something for everyone—from kiddie rides to family-friendly options and extreme thrill rides. Senior Vice President of Operations Rusty Fitzgerald shares that the fair aims to cater to all ages and thrill-seeking preferences.
One of the standout new attractions this year is the Hip Hop ride, which promises an adrenaline-pumping experience for those looking to test their skills and embrace the wild side of the fair. Fair attendee Tyler Deakins, who has been visiting the fair with his family for three years, is particularly excited about the variety of rides available, including his daughter Emma’s favorite, the “crazy mouth one.”
Games and Attractions Galore
In addition to rides, the fair features over 70 games, providing ample opportunities for guests to win prizes and create lasting memories. With more than 200 vendor locations, attendees can explore a diverse array of shopping options, from handmade crafts to unique souvenirs.
The fair runs through October 20, giving visitors plenty of time to indulge in the culinary offerings, enjoy the rides, and partake in the myriad of games and attractions.

The State Fair of Texas is more than just an event; it’s a cherished tradition that brings families and friends together to celebrate the rich culture and community spirit of Texas. With its blend of food, fun, and entertainment, it promises to be an unforgettable experience for all who attend.
