SMU Law Students Assist with Voter Registration Before Texas Deadline

Southern Methodist University Law Students Mobilize for Voter Registration

As the Texas voter registration deadline approaches, Southern Methodist University (SMU) Law students are stepping up to ensure that the voices of the Black community are heard in the upcoming elections. This initiative, spearheaded by the Black Law Students Association (BLSA), is a proactive effort to engage and empower voters ahead of the critical November elections.

A Commitment to Civic Engagement

Second-year law student Jalissah Stanton passionately articulates the importance of voting, stating, “It’s our right to vote, so we should definitely exercise it.” This sentiment resonates deeply within the BLSA, which is dedicated to fostering civic engagement among students and the broader community. Recognizing the significance of the upcoming election, BLSA members are working diligently to ensure that potential voters are not only registered but also informed about the electoral process.

On-the-Ground Registration Efforts

Last weekend, BLSA members set up a voter registration table at the SZN CHNGE Music Video Film Festival held at the Texas Theatre. This event provided a unique opportunity for attendees to check their voter registration status and register on the spot. Stanton highlighted a common issue many face: “Many would-be voters don’t realize their registration has been suspended, or that it needs to be updated.” She noted that a frequent reason for complications at polling sites is voters forgetting to update their addresses after moving. By addressing these issues now, BLSA aims to ensure that everyone who wishes to vote can do so without hindrance on Election Day.

Educating Voters Beyond the Presidential Race

In addition to facilitating voter registration, BLSA is committed to educating the public about the candidates and issues on the ballot. Beyond the high-profile names of former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris, BLSA members are using QR codes and pamphlets to provide information about local representatives, sample ballots, and polling locations. Stanton emphasizes the importance of being informed: “Knowing who else is going to be on the ballot allows you to do your own research and see what they stand for and see if that aligns with your goals.”

Community Engagement and Feedback

While most attendees at the film festival were already registered to vote, many expressed gratitude for the resources provided by BLSA. Zachary Haynes, a festival-goer, acknowledged the initiative’s importance, stating, “Let’s cut the record straight, every election is the most important … election of our life.” He underscored the significance of voting, whether for national leaders or local officials, asserting, “We’re the ones putting the politicians in power. We have that voice.”

A Personal Connection to the Cause

For Stanton and her fellow BLSA members, this initiative is more than just a civic duty; it is a personal mission. Stanton reflects on her motivations, saying, “Obviously I care deeply about certain issues, especially as a Black woman.” However, she emphasizes that the BLSA’s goal is not to impose their views on others but to provide information and support for informed decision-making.

Important Dates to Remember

As the deadline to register to vote looms on October 7, the urgency of BLSA’s efforts becomes even more apparent. Election Day is set for November 5, and the BLSA is determined to ensure that the community is prepared. Voters can check their registration status and find more information at votetexas.gov.

A Call to Action

The work being done by the Black Law Students Association at Southern Methodist University exemplifies the power of student-led initiatives in fostering civic engagement and ensuring that every voice is heard in the democratic process. As the election approaches, the importance of voter registration and education cannot be overstated, and the BLSA is at the forefront of this vital effort.
