McNeil High School Hosts Texas’ Largest Cross-Country Invitational

On September 21-22, McNeil High School proudly hosted the 30th annual McNeil Invitational, the largest cross-country event in Texas. Held at the picturesque Old Settlers Park in Round Rock, this year’s invitational attracted over 400 teams and nearly 6,300 runners, all eager to tackle a challenging course that has become a hallmark of the event.

A Tradition of Excellence

The McNeil Invitational is not just another race; it’s a prestigious gathering that showcases some of the finest high school cross-country athletes from across Texas. Round Rock ISD Athletic Director Jeff Cheatham emphasized the significance of the event, stating, “This prestigious event brings together some of the top high school cross country athletes from across Texas. The McNeil Invitational has a tradition of excellence, providing a competitive environment for teams and individual runners alike.” This sentiment resonates deeply within the running community, as the invitational has become a rite of passage for aspiring athletes.

The Perfect Venue

One of the key factors contributing to the event’s success is its location. Old Settlers Park is not only scenic but also has a rich history of hosting significant cross-country events, including the University Interscholastic League (UIL) State Cross Country Championships. McNeil Girls’ Head Cross Country and Track Coach Austin Wooten highlighted this advantage, noting, “We work closely with UIL and the City of Round Rock’s Parks and Recreation Department to make sure our course is exactly the same as the state course.” This meticulous attention to detail ensures that runners are well-prepared for future competitions.

Extensive Preparations

The week leading up to the invitational was a whirlwind of activity, with extensive preparations taking place to ensure everything ran smoothly. Coach Wooten shared insights into the hard work that went into setting up the event: “We worked from 8 to 5 every day setting up the park—flagging, fencing, and marking the course.” This dedication reflects the commitment of the McNeil community to provide a top-notch experience for all participants.

Community Support

The success of the McNeil Invitational was not solely due to the efforts of the coaching staff and athletes; it was also a testament to the incredible support from the community. Volunteers played a crucial role in the event, with various groups stepping up to help. McNeil runner Peyton Trost expressed her gratitude for the community involvement, stating, “Soccer ran the concession stand, basketball players helped direct people on the course, and our athletic trainers worked alongside Ascension Dell Children’s volunteers to care for injured runners. We had a lot of help.” This collaborative spirit not only made the event possible but also fostered a sense of unity among the participants and supporters.

Athletes’ Perspectives

For the athletes, participating in such a large-scale event is both exhilarating and challenging. Peyton Trost, a junior at McNeil, shared her pride in being part of the invitational. “This was our hardest race of the year, and I think we did really well. I think we’ve got a good chance at going to regionals again,” she said, reflecting the determination and optimism that drives her team.

Coach Wooten echoed Trost’s sentiments, expressing confidence in the team’s abilities. “I feel really good about where our team is at. We’re in a really tough District, but our girls can hold their own. They’ve worked really hard to get where they’re at, and I think they’re going to do well,” he remarked. This positive outlook is crucial as the season progresses, with the team aiming for success in upcoming competitions.

A Celebration of Cross-Country

The McNeil Invitational is more than just a race; it’s a celebration of cross-country running that brings together athletes, coaches, and communities. With its rich history, competitive spirit, and strong community support, the event continues to be a highlight of the Texas high school sports calendar. As the runners lace up their shoes and prepare for the challenges ahead, the legacy of the McNeil Invitational remains firmly entrenched in the hearts of all who participate.
