While this event is still over a year away, the band is already deep into preparations. “It just gives me chills sometimes, you know,” said trombone player Nicolas Barrientos, his excitement palpable. “We’re going all the way from New York over here from Texas!” The thrill of being selected for such a prestigious event is a testament to the band’s hard work and dedication.
A Unique Honor
Being chosen to perform at the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade is no small feat. The L.D. Bell Band is one of only about a dozen high school marching bands selected to participate, and notably, it is the only band from Texas. “Which is a huge honor, because Texas has many of the best band programs in the country,” said Suzanne Dell, the Director of Bands at L.D. Bell High School. “This is just gonna be an opportunity to just go and perform and have a great time doing something at a really high level with all of your friends at one of the most iconic events.” The pride in her voice reflects the significance of this achievement for the band and the school.
The Financial Commitment
However, such an incredible opportunity comes with a price tag. The band has already launched a fundraising campaign to support their trip to New York City. “Because it’s obviously a pretty big financial commitment to get to New York City, spend a week there,” Dell noted. The band aims to provide a comprehensive experience for the students, which includes not only the parade but also cultural excursions like attending a Broadway show. “We want to be able to take them to a Broadway show, fly them on airplanes out there, all the bells and whistles. Get a good New York experience!” This commitment to creating lasting memories is evident in the planning.

The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade is a monumental occasion, with last year’s event setting a record of over 28 million viewers. The scale of the event is not lost on the students. “The fact that we got chosen to be in something so huge,” said Percussion Captain Penelope Bush, her eyes wide with disbelief. “It didn’t feel, like, real!” The enormity of the opportunity is both exhilarating and daunting, but the band members are ready to embrace the challenge.

As the band practices, their shared passion for music and performance shines through. “I want people to feel the joy of the Bell Band that we feel whenever we’re playing,” Barrientos expressed.
