Exciting Changes Coming to the Historic Cotton Bowl Stadium
The Cotton Bowl Stadium, a cherished landmark in Dallas, is undergoing significant renovations that promise to enhance the experience for fans and visitors alike. With nearly a century of history, this iconic venue is set to receive a $140 million facelift, funded by a 2% increase in hotel occupancy taxes approved by Dallas voters in 2022. The ambitious two-year project kicked off in March and has already made substantial progress, with the first phase completed just in time for the highly anticipated annual Red River Showdown between the Texas Longhorns and the Oklahoma Sooners.
Upgraded Facilities for Teams and Media
One of the most notable improvements is the modernization of the press box, which now features a state-of-the-art national broadcast room. This upgrade is complemented by new facilities for both home and visiting teams, as well as expansions to existing rooms. These enhancements are designed to ensure that media personnel and teams have the best possible experience during events, reflecting the stadium’s commitment to maintaining its status as a premier venue for college football and other major events.
Enhanced Accessibility and Guest Experience
Accessibility is a key focus of the renovations, with plans to implement features that cater to individuals with disabilities. Chris Turner-Nowhere, assistant director for planning, design, and facilities with the Dallas Park and Recreation Department, emphasized the importance of these changes. “Some of those renovations are basically [new] ramps,” he explained. The project will also see significant upgrades to restrooms, including wider stalls and the installation of grab bars, ensuring that all attendees can navigate the stadium comfortably and safely.
Improved Entry and Exit Points
The renovation team, which includes the architecture and urban design firm Overland Partners, JE Dunn Construction, the Dallas Parks Department, Fair Park First, and the State Fair of Texas, is also focused on improving the overall flow of foot traffic in and out of the stadium. The addition of 14 new escalators and multi-story entries at two west entrance gates will streamline access, significantly reducing the time it takes for fans to enter and exit the venue. Project manager Stefan Kesler noted, "The biggest positive impact of these renovations is the quicker ways to get in and out of the stadium." This is particularly crucial during high-attendance events, where long exit times can pose safety concerns.
Future Phases and Continued Improvements
While the first phase of renovations has been completed, the next stages are already in the planning stages. These will focus on further enhancing accessibility and improving the overall guest experience. After the conclusion of this year’s State Fair, which runs until October 20, work will resume in late October. Plans include demolishing existing ramps between concourses on the west side of the stadium to make way for larger, more accommodating ramps that will also feature additional space for concessions.
Concession Upgrades for a Better Game Day Experience
In addition to accessibility improvements, the renovations will introduce new concession options, including a grab-and-go style service on the main, mid-deck, and upper concourses. This initiative aims to reduce wait times for food and beverages, allowing fans to enjoy their game day experience without the hassle of long lines. The addition of more bathrooms and concession stands will further enhance the comfort and convenience of attendees.
A Bright Future for the Cotton Bowl
With renovations expected to be completed before the start of next year’s State Fair, the Cotton Bowl Stadium is poised to emerge as a modernized venue that honors its rich history while embracing the future. The ongoing commitment to improving accessibility, enhancing facilities, and streamlining guest experiences reflects Dallas’s dedication to preserving this historic site as a premier destination for sports and entertainment. As the project progresses, fans can look forward to enjoying a revitalized Cotton Bowl that meets the needs of a new generation while celebrating its storied past.
