Texas Drivers Can Once Again Order Embossed License Plates After 15 Years

Texas Drivers Reclaim Nostalgia with the Return of Embossed License Plates

After a lengthy 15-year hiatus, Texas drivers can once again adorn their vehicles with embossed license plates featuring raised numbers and letters. This nostalgic return marks a significant shift in the state’s vehicle registration landscape, as embossed plates were phased out in 2009 in favor of more efficient, digitally produced flat plates. The Texas Legislature took a step toward rekindling this classic design in 2023 by authorizing My Plates, the state’s official plate provider, to reintroduce the embossed options.

A Trip Down Memory Lane

The decision to bring back embossed plates has been met with enthusiasm from many Texas residents. My Plates has rolled out several design options that evoke a sense of nostalgia. Among the offerings is a retro black and yellow plate reminiscent of the 1950s, alongside a sleek black and gold plate and a striking blue and gold plate that utilizes high-definition gold sheeting. The response has been overwhelmingly positive, with over 1,000 orders already placed, signaling a strong demand for these classic designs.

The New Offerings

In addition to the initial designs, My Plates plans to introduce a second line of plates featuring black and white, gold and black, and carbon fiber styles. However, these new designs will only enter production once they receive at least 200 preorders, ensuring that there is sufficient interest before moving forward.

Pricing Structure

For those eager to get their hands on an embossed plate, My Plates offers a variety of pricing plans. An embossed plate costs $114 per year if you opt for the five-year plan, $173 per year for a three-year plan, or $270 for a single year. This pricing structure provides flexibility for drivers who wish to showcase their unique style while also contributing to the state’s revenue.

A Longing for the Past

Surveys conducted by My Plates revealed a significant longing among Texas drivers for the embossed plates of yesteryear. Steve Farrar, CEO and President of My Plates, shared insights with The Dallas Morning News, emphasizing the emotional connection many have with these designs. “From a design perspective, these bring back a little nostalgia, that retro feel,” he stated. “They’re very classy.” This sentiment resonates with those who appreciate the aesthetic appeal and historical significance of embossed plates.

Economic Impact

Since its inception in 2009, My Plates has not only catered to the aesthetic desires of Texans but has also made a substantial economic impact. The company has generated over $190 million in new revenue for the Texas general revenue fund, showcasing the financial benefits of offering personalized and unique license plate options. This revenue plays a crucial role in supporting various state initiatives and services.

The Future of License Plates in Texas

As Texas embraces this revival of embossed license plates, it reflects a broader trend of nostalgia and personalization in vehicle registration. The return of these plates not only satisfies a demand for classic designs but also highlights the importance of individual expression on the roads. With the promise of more designs on the horizon and a growing interest from drivers, the embossed plate phenomenon is set to flourish once again in the Lone Star State.

In a world increasingly dominated by digital and flat designs, the embossed plates stand out as a symbol of tradition and style, allowing Texans to connect with their past while driving into the future.
